About The Event

Volunteer at the on-going archeology being done at the Swann Site in the Historic Port Tobacco Village. Opportunities include laboratory work and field work. Opportunities are available every Monday in April! The project is an investigation of the James Swann site that is now owned by Charles County. James Swann was a "man of color" (possibly a Native American) that acquired land in Port Tobacco in the 1840's and operated a tavern and oyster house in village for almost twenty-five years. Sponsored by the Charles County Chapter of the Archaeological Society of Maryland and Charles County Government. The event is free and open to the public. For additional information and to RSVP email Esther Doyle Read at ReadE@charlescountymd.gov.
